Taking care of your Gold Jewellery

Hello!

Gold is the preferred precious metal when it comes to jewelry because it is attractive and lasts a long time. But to keep your gold jewelry shining and in good shape, you need to take proper care of it. Thankfully, cleaning gold articles and ornaments is not as difficult as cleaning other metals like silver. However, here are a few precautions that need to be taken when cleaning ornaments that are made of gold.

Do’s and Don’ts for cleaning gold ornaments
Whether you wear it regularly or you keep it safe in your jewelry box, it is important to clean your gold jewelry regularly.

Avoid contact with chlorine and other abrasives
Gold is one metal that goes with any outfit, and can be used daily or occasionally. However, it is best avoid wearing gold during activities like swimming in a pool or when using chemicals for cleaning. This is because cleaning chemicals, and chlorine and bleach that are used for treating the pool water can cause discoloration and abrasions, and relieve your gold of its luster permanently.

Basic cleaning
Layers of dust and dirt often settle on gold ornaments that are used regularly. To rid your jewelry of these layers of dust, you should clean it with warm water, using a soft brush and a non-detergent cleaning solution. The dirt settled around the stones in your jewelry should be cleaned with the help of a soft cloth. At all costs, avoid using sharp objects like steel wool or nail filers as they scrape off the smooth gold finish of your jewelry.

Cleaning with alcohol and other cleaning chemicals
When you wear your gold jewelry regularly, even when you cook, oil and grease residues that settle on it make it less radiant. To clean off the grease and grimy dirt on your jewelry, you can clean it with alcohol or any other gold-friendly cleaning chemical. Placing the jewelry in a solution – 50% warm water and 50% rubbing alcohol – helps you clean off the grease quickly and easily. In case you are using any cleaning chemicals, be sure to rinse the jewelry thoroughly, to remove the chemicals from it completely.

Besides the conventional cleaning solutions, you could also get an ultrasonic cleaner that can be easily used for cleaning gold jewelry at home. However, when it comes to cleaning and polishing expensive gold items, it is best to seek the services of a professional jeweler.
